Playdough. Is there anything more versatile? We are frequent playdough makers and have tried many different recipies. We love to try new additions to our playdough tool kit, and as the children have been interested in spacey kinds of things, I decided to try some galaxy playdough.
There are thousand of playdough recipes about: on Pinterest, blogs, books and websites. My basic go to recipe has to be the one in the back of the ABA “red book” cookbook, but almost all of the basic cooked playdough recipes you can find are the same. I have learned a few tips along the way. For example, you can’t use salt that is too coarse, it seems to make the playdough absorb water from the atmosphere and so end up soggy very quickly. (So, don’t buy that really cheap salt unless you want to grind it in the food processor. Which is totally an option if you already have some of it!) Also while Cream of Tartar is the best option, vinegar also works, because although the quality is not quite so good it will get you through a rainy day alive, and what more can you ask for?
The next bit is colouring. Most recipes use food colouring, which works quite well but you seem to need a lot of it, the colours are limited and we don’t always have some in the house. I use powder paints quite successfully, just adding a spoon or two before cooking. Powder paints are tempura paints designed to be mixed with water for painting and ou can get them from art or teaching supply shops.
The galaxy playdough was made with a different form of colouring again – old crayons. It’s great if you want a strong colour, as I did in this case, and/or you have piles of broken crayons around which simply can NOT be thrown out! You can find the recipe here.
Adding glitter is always so much fun. Scented oils are also a great addition.
Then it time to think about what you are going to add. In keeping with our galaxy theme, we found lots of shiny things and alfoil to play with ours.
Honestly, you can’t go wrong, the worst that will happen is you will have a goop to play with instead, so just experiment and have fun.
